Radio reception is inconsistent and affected by several factors.

Compared to FM, AM radio tends to cover a much larger area. The time of day also plays affects reception. Generally, reception will be better after sunset, when it is not unusual to hear AM stations from hundreds of miles away.

Reception of local stations is intermittent and sound is inferior, with a lot of static and tinny sound quality.

FM stations offer better sound quality, but FM stations’ range is much smaller compared to AM stations. Moving the radio to a different position will often improve the reception. In some rural areas there. May be no FM stations.
